Every year, each of CUHC’s six teams takes on their Oxford counterparts in the annual Varsity matches. Varsity is the pinnacle of any Cambridge student’s sporting life, and selection is highly competitive for all seven squads.

For the 2nd and 3rd XIs (and a specially prepared Men’s 4th XI), these matches are held in late February with the venue alternating between Wilberforce road (Cambridge) and Iffley road (Oxford). In 2021, this event, best known as BDotY, will be held at Wilberforce Road, Cambridge.

The Blues’ matches are traditionally held two weeks later, typically on the second Sunday of March, on neutral turf. Since 2003 the matches have been played at Southgate Hockey Centre in London.

Results in 2020

All Varsity Hockey Matches were played before the social distancing measures put in place by the Government in response to SARS-COV-2 (COVID19).

The 2020 edition of BDotY saw the Wanderers and Bedouin win 5-2 and 1-1 (2-1 on shuffles) respectively. The Nomads and Blunderers fought commendably in 0-0 draws and both lost on shuffles. The Squanderers lost 1-0 during regular time. 2020 saw the Wanderer’s first win since 2015, where they also won 5-2.

At the 120th University Hockey Matches, both Cambridge sides came out victorious. The Women’s Blues won on shuffles after a thrilling game that finished 3-3. A fantastic win for our ladies, who had not won in the four year’s prior. Meanwhile, the Men’s Blues made it two wins in a row, with an emphatic 5-0 win over their Oxonian counterparts.
